i recently pulled some stills from atonement for a treatment, and i've kind of become obsessed with them. i've adored the movie since the first time i saw it, but there's something about the tension and emotion that come through in each silent frame, that makes me feel like i'm watching the whole film in a single moment.

here are a few polaroids that ross took on saturday, with a really really old camera we found in a junk shop and some really old polaroid film, a present from doug.

first its me riding TT, the bay mare i ride at my riding school, and then me long-lining my sweet baby sophie, with a saddle and bridle. she gets all giraffe on me with the bridle, methinks specially just for the camera. she still thinks the whole training thing is weird, and i'm pretty sure that she doesnt know that horses are ridden by humans.

nothing new; i was looking through his archives for wardrobe references for a work project yesterday. his photos and vintage photo competitions are always so inspiring.

i never would have thought bright socks would make me love an outfit, but here it does.

i suppose this post is inspired in a way by the current orthopedic shoe trend (worishofers anyone?), which i approve of. i have had a soft spot for our local greencross shop since they brought out those beautiful leather brogues a few years ago with the cushiony arch support and the heel that won't kill you, and i love finding a pretty vintage shoe with a heel of an only inch or so that are both lady-like and your granny would approve of.

here are a few of my favourite dorky-comfy vintage specimens:

- i found these orthopedic klinik two tone pumps at the hospice shop on louis botha. they kind of make me think of a WWII nurse's shoes. which is good.

- these nude leather slingbacks belonged to my norwegian granny, so they are priceless to me. my gran was a shoe fiend like myself - she had a whole flippen closet just for her shoes. so its in the genes.

- i got these black cut out peep toes from bellbottoms in pretoria, my absolute favourite shop ever. they've got a bit of a 40's structural look about them, which i like, but in reality they're probably much younger than that. i'm not good at guessing though, so i won't.

- my mom had a pair of brown tasseled pumps similar to these when i was a kid, which probably explains why i was drawn to this pair when i saw them in deerhunter in greenside.

- these lace ups are also from deerhunter, and although they are not heels, they are strange little dorky platform orthopedic shoes, so they count.

- and lastly, these are not vintage, but i just had to include them. i bought them at an old lady shoe shop in portugal, and my friend leslie called them 'the unsexiest shoes ever'. well, i thought they were pretty cute...

everyday i'm getting closer and closer to the day that i can start riding my sweet little sophie-horse. i'm so excited about it that i even dream about it most nights. and so, i guess its inevitable that i'm wishful thinking about what to wear, so that we can be the most dashing pair to gallop round the neighbourhood.

i can't believe i just saw this now, but i'm so glad i did.

remember a while back i gave away a bunch of dresses and all you all thought i was mad? well they all went to a girl i never met, indianna, and in exchange she gave me a box full of the prettiest jewellery (will post pictures soon).

it truly was just such an amazing experiencing connecting with a someone, who was previously a stranger, through my blog. i hope its just the first of many.

anyway. today i saw that indianna posted a couple of pictures on her blog, quirk, where she is wearing her new dresses. i'm so glad to see them loved and worn.

i was organising my closet the other day when i came across this 1970's dress i bought a few years back at my beloved bellbottoms in pretoria. i was really into the 60's and 70's back in my student years, but now i can't seem to pull off the bright colours and bold patterns as well anymore.

perhaps i'm getting old and boring :)

anyway. this dress was one of a whole closetful that used to belong to a lady who worked for a big, fashionable department store back her youth, and she bought so many dresses (probably on store discount!) that there were several that still had the tags on, never worn, and also several of the same dress just in different colours.

that day i came home with pretty much a truckload of dresses, and i wore them constantly, but now, years later, most of them are sold or given away. i'm holding onto only a handful of them, including this one, that even if i don't wear them so much anymore, i just can't bear to part with.

so, no blog posts for ages because some little bugger stole the copper out of the phone lines of our building at work. so, no phones and no internet. ah well, its africa. these things happen.

back to business. i poke around a lot on etsy for dress inspiration, because, really, there's always so much good stuff to look at. here are my tuesday favourites. i hope you enjoy them too.

a 1960's wiggle dress with a sharp collar, and the low dip of it at the back reminds me a bit of the latest dear creatures collection's collars, which i love. and i'm not sure if its clear on this picture, but it has little buttons down the back too. a plus. from allen company inc.

peter pan collars and bows... i never tire of these. this is an exquisite little hand stitched 1930's dress. and there's the sweetest little story behind it too! from thirteen eighty five.

there is something architectural about this 1940's dress's sleeves and giant bow that i love. its not girly, like one would expect from a dress with a giant pink bow. its sophisticated and lady-like and grown up. i would find any excuse to wear this dress as often as i can, and feel all sophisticated and lady-like and grown up and stuff. from thrush.
